What is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment used to reduce submental fat, commonly referred to as a "double chin." The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down and absorb fat. This treatment is non-surgical and is designed for people who want to contour their jawline and reduce fat under the chin without invasive procedures.

How Does Kybella Work?

Kybella works by using deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells under the chin. When injected into the targeted area, the acid breaks down the fat cells, which are then naturally metabolized and eliminated by the body over time. Once these cells are destroyed, they cannot store or accumulate fat again, leading to a more contoured and defined jawline.

Procedure Duration:

A Kybella treatment session usually lasts between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the amount of fat being treated and the number of injections required. Multiple sessions are often needed, with most patients requiring 2 to 4 treatments spaced about a month apart for optimal results.

Post-Care Instructions:

  • Apply ice packs to the treated area to reduce swelling and discomfort.

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity and excessive sun exposure for a few days after treatment.

  • Stay hydrated and avoid excessive alcohol intake to help with the healing process.

  • Some swelling, bruising, or redness is normal and should subside within a few days to a week.

  • Refrain from massaging or manipulating the treated area.

Results and Recovery:

  • Minimal downtime: Most patients can return to their regular activities within a day or two, although swelling and bruising may last up to a week.

  • Results become visible within 4 to 6 weeks as the body gradually eliminates the destroyed fat cells.

  • Once the desired contour is achieved, the results are long-lasting, as the treated fat cells are permanently removed.

  • Multiple treatment sessions may be required, depending on the amount of fat being treated and the patient's goals.
